What is Urban Heat Island (UHI)?

Urban Heat Island (UHI) is defined a metropolitan area that is significantly warmer than its surrounding areas mainly due to urbanization. There are many reasons for Urban Heat Island (UHI). The main cause of UHI effect is man-made material surfaces which effectively retain heat. More than half of the surfaces in cities are man-made. Thus, cities heat up more than rural areas. The temperature difference usually is larger at night.
